Reality Check: The Way Things Are Right Now

"The music industry is very healthy. The record industry is the problem. The notion that the only way to monetize artist creation is 10 songs that come out every 18 months, in a package called an album — the classic record model — isn’t what it used to be. [Musicians can profit from] reality shows. Fashion. Maybe I release five or six tracks and the rest comes in a paid subscription, that is basically a fan club…. Most labels are going to become management companies [making money from booking concerts, etc. rather than selling CDs.] There will be a lot of pain."

- Microsoft's J Allard on the state of the music industry right now in the New York Times

DFA Records Offer Free Music For November

As long as your willing to cough up some modest and not so forthright personal information, DFA Records is giving you the chance to download two songs and one video, for free through 7Digital.

The songs are radio session tracks from Prinzhorn Dance School and Shocking Pinks and a video of LCD Soundsystem playing "Us Vs Them" live in Manchester.

The download option expires on November 30th.

Gold Standards Labs: R.I.P.

It always a sad day when a fellow lab of the experimental musical variety closes, and with that introduction, it should be said that Gold Standard Labs has decided to shut its doors.

On Monday, they made the following announcement from the GSL web site, "In recent years, we've experienced the onset of factors that have seriously limited our ability to maintain what we feel is the essence of the label; the experimental attitude and artistic freewheeling of times past are simply no longer sustainable. Rather than compromise our goals and beliefs, or allow our course to be charted by financial constraint and an industry in flux, we've decided the time has come for GSL to cease releasing new music, and to close this chapter of our story."

The current home of bands like Dmonstrations, The Mars Volta, Sabertooth Tiger, as well as being the past home to Arab On Radar, GoGoGo Airheart, XBXRX, and a long list of bands.

The announcement went on to say "The experimental attitude and artistic freewheeling of times past are simply no longer sustainable. Rather than compromise our goals and beliefs, or allow our course to be charted by financial constraint and an industry in flux, we've decided the time has come for GSL to cease releasing new music, and to close this chapter of our story."

Don't worry, the back catalog will always be available at Redeye Distribution/11spot.com.

Trent Reznor Announces Nine Inch Nails Remix Album Titled Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D

Trent Reznor recently announced he was taking Nine Inch Nails down the path of freedom by being label free, and he quickly followed with the news of a new remix album that will feature the likes of saul williams, ladytron, bill laswell, the faint, and more on a release called Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D.

He'll release for download through Amazon, Vinyl, and a CD / DVD package, as well as offering pre-formatted tracks for GarageBand, Ableton Live and Wave files for people to remix on their own. Hold on to your hats, people, he's just getting going with this not being tied to a label thing.

Here's what Trent Reznor said about it on the Nine Inch Nails web site"I can make this easy for you: if you just want to hear the tracks as cheaply as possible, get it digitally. The highest fidelity will likely be Amazon (through legal means). If you want something that's aesthetically cool and will enhance any collection, get the vinyl. Trust me, it looks great. The extra tracks are fairly minor embellishments to the whole (and surely someone will upload them instantly). If you want higher quality tracks legally, a nice package AND a complete multitrack of the whole record, get the physical CD / DVD ROM."

MP3: Clipd Beaks Sign to LovePump United

Dark and scary and of this earth. Ladies and gentlemen, with Clipd Beaks, I give you the first band offering worthy of the Fall season. The music is actually more experimental than scary, and scary might be a bit of a strong word, but the band uses subconscious themes to a devastating effect, and the power of that sound might freak you out.

Real drums, analogue synth, lots of creativity and some lo-fi samples of found sounds get thrown together into a heady vortex of sound and cacophony and chaos. Occasionally they bring the music back into to order, just so they can make it all crazy again, you know? The back and forth is nice.

They recently signed to LovePump United to release their upcoming album Hoarse Lords on November 6th.

MP3: Clipd Beaks

Clipd Beaks: Hoarse Lords Track List:

03 Manipulator
04 High on Charms

MP3: Picastro

Toronto's Picastro are making the best kind of hypnotizing music. Hortur, from the band's new album Whore Luck, is slow and abstract, but with a sharp focus. The strings glide in over the top of the music and the piano provides a dry backbone to the melody. Then the vocals mesmerize the song.

Siouxsie Sioux Goes Solo

Siouxsie Sioux
releases her much anticipated solo album 'Mantaray' on Monday.

Outsider Ice Queen Siouxsie Sioux is up there with all the other rock legends of our time. Having performed for the first time with her exhibitionist experimentalist band Siouxsie & the Banshees in 1976, with Sid Vicious on drums, this Sioux has snowballed to greater things each time. Perhaps it was the influence of the London Bromley suburbs, or was it the influence of Velvet Underground, Can, Bowie or J.G. Ballard. No matter, on tour the gender bending Banshees soon built up a large following scoring them their 1st top ten hit in 1978 with Hong Kong Garden. Those were the early days. What followed now was 17 years of material recorded under the Banshees moniker but also as The Creatures with then husband and drummer Budgie.

And now? Siouxsie Sioux finally makes her solo 10 track debut that portrays an a unique sense of personal freedom that ranges from an industrial stomp to electronic mutterings and glam affairs of the heart. Lyrical themes on the album include disappointment, distrust and despair, but overlying this is a warmth of spirit. The track listing is as follows:

1. Into A Swan
2. About To Happen
3. Here Comes That Day
4. Loveless
5. If It Doesn't Kill You
6. One Mile Below
7. Drone Zone
8. Sea Of Tranquilty
9. They Follow You
10. Heaven And Alchemy

Band of Horses Release Is There A Ghost MP3

Dark and dry, just like every bit of of Band of Horses music we've heard in the past. That's a good thing. Somehow these guys cold compress their sound into a sweet package of BOH sonification everytime, I swear it's magic...

The new single sees the boys not missing a thing since the departure of Mat Brooke last year. They worked with Phil Elk who also helped out with 2006's Everything All The Time. Is There A Ghost is part their upcoming Cease To Begin album, due out on October 9th via Sub Pop Records.

Animal Collective Start Tour Today

With Strawberry Jam coming out next week, Animal Collective have jumped out on tour. The music for this album was actually started two years ago, so it would be interesting to hear what the band is actually working on right now. Animal Collective really is one of those ahead of its time bands, so right now they're probably developing the sounds that other bands will be copying in 2010.

The songs were written in international hot spots like New York, Lisbon, Paris and Baltimore (who knew?) by Avey Tare and Panda Bear, with the rest of the band adding a more complete sound as they all hooked up to work through the music.

The band recorded the album at the Wavelab in Tucson with Scott Colburn (Arcade Fire, Animal Collective) as the producer, then headed back to Brooklyn for the final mixdown with Nicholas Vernhes at the Rare Book Room. Strawberry Jam is due for release on September 10th via Domino Records. Their Peacebone EP is out now.

You like the Icelandic cuties Amiina. Sure, we all do. Unfortunately, we'll all have to wait a little longer to see their experimental act live, as they've canceled their U.S. shows due to someone in the band having an illness. You can check em' out in the Spring when they make it back to the U.S.

PJ Harvey Sets U.S. Shows

Although she once said she'll never play live again, PJ Harvey has announced a select few shows in the United States that will include the cities New York and Los Angeles.

She's got an album coming out (of course), so you figure that you have to play at least a few shows, you know? Hype hype hype. And publicity. The album is called White Chalk and comes out on September 25th via Island Records. It was produced by the triumvirate of Polly, Flood & John Parish, and includes contributions from Eric Drew Feldman, and Jim White of the Dirty Three.

So jump on a jet or hit the road and live out your own Jack Kerouac fantasy, hitting all of the (2) shows she'll be playing in the states.

Supergrass Bassist Breaks Back While Sleepwalking In France

Bassist Mick Quinn of Supergrass recently went out for a nighttime adventure while vacationing at a villa in the south of France. Turns out Mick was sleepwalking, and ended up walking right out of a first floor window. He ended up with two broken vertebrae in his back and a smashed heel.

"We hope the crazy fool gets back on his feet as soon as possible. I'm sure he'll make a full recovery; he's a tough cookie," said Gaz Coombes in a statement released by the band.

As it turns out, Supergrass will have to cancel their Oxford Carling Academy show on September 23. Mick is expected to make a full recovery but will take several months to heal.

Okkervil River Release
New Video, Tour Dates

Okkervil River have released their new video for Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe in the run up to their newly announced tour dates for North America and Europe. The video was directed by Margaret Brown and is inducing descriptive words like "indie-noir" and "near cinematic experience" to describe both the album and the video. The video does have high production values and might actually change the way you think of hotel rooms.
